Bucket List: Swim with Whale Sharks

Imagine yourself on a Panga motorboat racing into the horizon. The quaint town of La Paz fades in the distance and you enter the calm, protected waters of the bay. This is where you’ll find them. This is their kingdom. The boat suddenly idles and you stare at an approaching shadow in the water that grows larger and larger until your guide exclaims, “Get in now, go, go, go!” When your guide is excitedly rushing to don his snorkel gear, you know you’re in for something special. You jump in and the hazy green water casts a dreamlike spell. Seconds later, you’re face-to-face with the gentle giant itself, the whale shark. Growing up to 40-feet in length and with mouths up to five-feet wide, your initial instinct is to flee but then your curiosity takes over and its distinctive white polka dot coat hypnotizes you with awe. The world’s largest fish are filter-feeders after all, completely harmless to humans. You’re enthralled and stay for hours as the captain cruises around, spotting more and more. It’s an experience so momentous that you recount the rush over an organic, locally grown lunch in the colonial, cobblestone-lined town of Todos Santos before returning to the resort’s familiar embrace.
